There is a moment, arriving at The Madrid EDITION for the first time, when the city’s noise drops away entirely. The hotel occupies a nineteenth-century building on Plaza de las Descalzas — one of those addresses that manages to be central and improbably quiet at the same time. The lobby, designed by Ian Schrager and his long-time collaborator John Pawson, reduces everything to texture: pale stone, dark timber, the weight of a room that knows exactly what it is.

The four new rooftop suites, added as part of a quiet expansion completed this spring, occupy the building’s top floor. They were designed by the same team as the original interiors, and the continuity is evident — but there is something different up here. More air. More sky. A sense that the city is not pressing against the glass but resting below it.

The largest suite — Suite 501 — runs to 110 square metres and includes a wraparound terrace that faces southwest, catching the long Madrid light until nearly ten in the evening in summer. The bedroom is anchored by a custom four-poster in smoked oak. The bathroom, clad in honed Calacatta marble, has a freestanding tub positioned to face the window. None of this is an accident.

What makes the EDITION suites different from the obvious luxury competitors in Madrid is restraint. There are no gold taps. No chandelier. The minibar is stocked with things you actually want to drink — a Galician albariño, a small-batch vermouth from a producer in Reus, two cans of something sparkling that turns out to be very good. The welcome amenity is a single stem of something from a florist in Malasaña, chosen the morning of your arrival.

The rooftop suites are available from €780 per night. Guests have exclusive access to the EDITION’s private roof terrace between 7 and 10 am — a window of quiet before the bar opens and the evening crowd arrives. It is, frankly, the best two hours in Madrid.
